1923 Season 1 marketing campaign
The 1923 S1 campaign involved multiple photo and motion concepts requiring three photographers and two motion set ups, all working simultaneously across the show’s location in Butte, MT. In order to shoot photo and motion interiors on location, we built a structural tent half the size of a football field, to allow for three separate studios. With a 20-minute drive from the studio tent to the exterior locations, there was just enough time to capture all assets in one 15 hour day. Crew and equipment were brought in from Missoula, Bozeman, Salt Lake City, and Los Angeles.
Photographer James Minchin shot key art photography, and character portraits that were featured in Vanity Fair.
Photographer Sarah Coulter captured period photography using a Graflex RB Super D 4x5 camera on location in Butte, MT. Later, at a lab in NYC, she developed the prints using an Orotone process, which was typical of the time period. These stills were a key component of the social campaign.

The Orotone stills became the foundation for the Of the Earth motion campaign. Shot with a Phantom camera on a stage in Los Angeles, we set the framed Orotone stills, show props, and a custom fabricated 1923 sign in a recreation of Montana soil.

Finally, we produced 1923: Capturing Authentic Photography - Orotone Photography: How It's Made, a behind the scenes look at the Orotone process, which won a Clio Entertainment Silver.
A/V content was captured on separate shoots in Butte, Los Angeles, and Malta.
